Darkroom

A skincare storefront that reads like a magazine and behaves like a shop. The homepage tells a story as you scroll, the product page carries the depth beauty shoppers expect, and the motion is CSS — there is no JavaScript framework in the theme at all.

Darkroom homepage hero: the headline The alchemy of light beside a lit serum bottle on near-black

What it is

Most beauty themes make you choose. The pretty one is slow and shallow; the feature-heavy one looks like everyone else. Darkroom is built to be all three things at once: art-directed, genuinely deep where beauty sells, and fast enough that the speed is a feature rather than an apology.

The name is where a photograph becomes visible. A darkroom is dark on purpose — the image only resolves because everything around it is held back — which is exactly how this theme treats a product: near-black ground, one warm light, and nothing competing with what you are selling. It is a design system, not a mood board.

A tour

The ingredient story

A scroll-drawn gold spine threads each active to the benefit it delivers. It reads as a story rather than a spec grid, and it runs on CSS scroll-driven animation with zero JavaScript.

A product page built for beauty

Shade swatches, quantity, add to cart and a key-ingredients breakdown with concentrations, all above the fold. Further down: how to use, before and after, reviews and complete-the-routine picks.

Results, shown honestly

A side-by-side before and after with week labels and captions. On the product page the same block becomes a draggable comparison slider.

The ritual

Numbered AM and PM steps that turn a product list into a routine a customer can follow, and reorder from.

Collections that filter

Filtering and sorting with swatch-aware facets, quick-add straight from the grid, and a cart drawer that never leaves the page.

Mobile first, not mobile last

Every section is designed at phone width too. The hero image alone drops from 25 KB to 11 KB on a phone, because the responsive set is built rather than assumed.

On speed scores, and why there is no number here. We do not quote a Lighthouse score: the only one we have was measured on a Shopify development store, which loads a performance kit, a preview bar and a hundred-odd checkout preloads that no real storefront carries, so it would flatter us in one direction and misrepresent us in the other. We do not claim green Core Web Vitals either, because Core Web Vitals is three metrics gathered from your real visitors over 28 days — it describes a live store, not a theme, and no theme can hand it to you. The load-time figures that used to sit in this table were measured on our previous demo store; that store was replaced in August 2026 and the numbers are being re-taken rather than restated. The spec above is what we can stand behind today, and the honest advice is to measure your own store before and after you switch.

See it live

The demo storefront is at demo.fyzn.studio. It is the real theme on a real Shopify store, with the twelve-product demo catalogue, working filters, cart drawer and product pages.

It asks for a password right now, and that is expected. Shopify keeps a pre-launch store like this one behind a password page until the theme is listed, and visitors who arrive from the Theme Store listing itself are let straight through. If you want to look around before then, ask us for access and we will send you the password.

Availability

Darkroom is being submitted to the Shopify Theme Store. Until it is listed there, get in touch and we will tell you where it stands. If you need something bespoke instead, start a brief — the theme and our custom work run on the same system.
